I'm finishing up new project with a very retro witchy vibes which basically drew on inspiration well from a lot of things I liked. But while the draft is done I need one more pass on, but I need to let it rest. The one thing I always know about writing is that I have to give things a break, so I can look at it with fresh eyes. Usually this about spelling and grammar errors - it's amazing how much you missed when looking at the same sentence a dozen times. But it's also about plot stuff, minor things that might come to mind when I come back more refreshed. And always endings. My endings are never really set in my first drafts, more of suggestions as I'm figuring out what is the last impression I want to leave.
While this project is simmering I pivot to a new project. Although this time my new project is actually something I started last year, a half-finished draft that I'll hopefully finished this time around. I’m hoping I'll have it done by the end of the year. One thing working in it's favor is that it has a high concept which means I have good idea of what to expect and I still have my outline from last year.
As it'll be November as I work on this, it means I'll technically be doing Nanowrimo. In the past few years I haven't truly done it, but used the framework as encouragement to meet certain goals. I think the way to do nano is to use it as goal setting. Maybe it's 50K into a project, but doesn't mean it's a full story or not. Maybe it's full story. Maybe it's writing 15 short stories. Nano is about writing and meeting a goal, and I think there's no harm is changing up those definitions to suit your needs.
