In general I'm not a big fan of fancy writing tools. I'm a creature of habit, and when I find something that works for me, I just stick with it. Which is why I keep using Word (or break out notebooks to jot down notes). I like to keep things simple so I can just focus on writing.
While I don't use many tools for writing, I have found a few things have helped solve rather unique problem’s that my usual tools can't solve effectively.
For a story set in a fictious town, and to better "see" how things were laid out, I turned this a city map generator ( https://probabletrain.itch.io/city-generator)
that gave me and idea of what the city to look like. I took to photoshop to add in more greenspaces, and mark some landmarks, all which help gain a clearer vision of the setting.
And when I wrote a short story on a secondary world, I really liked using this generator (https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/) to envsion the boundaries and scope of the world.
Sure in both cases, I could have just drawn some odd shapes on a piece of paper, but this is a slightly more fun and loads more neater than my scribbles!
